Shipping markets are by their nature cyclical, but anticipating the timing of market cycles is rarely easy in practice, not least because shipping’s cycles are so enmeshed with other economic cycles, notably in underlying commodity markets. For example, while some of the key shipping sectors appear to be moving into the next phase of the cycle, current oil market uncertainties are complicating matters elsewhere. Oil is one of the headline global commodities and no wonder: it meets around a third of all global energy needs. From a shipping perspective, quite apart from the bunkers currently use

Interview with the Nordwest-Zeitung conducted with Andreas Bullwinkel, Managing Director of Container Terminal Wilhelmshaven JadeWeserPort-Marketing GmbH & Co. KG, published on 29. 3. 2018 Q. Mr. Bullwinkel, why should a logistics business choose the Container Terminal Wilhelmshaven instead of say the port of Hamburg? A. Wilhelmshaven has several advantages: on the nautical side, it boasts very short channel navigation times, which brings significant time and cost savings potential for shipping companies. This also makes timetables much more reliable. On the land side, it is possible to lo
Panattoni Europe, a leading project developer of industrial and logistics real estate, has been awarded a contract by the Volkswagen Group to build a new multi-brand packaging centre for the export of automotive parts. The choice was made for the JadeWeserPort, Wilhelmshaven. Germany’s only deep-water port provides direct links to the mainline rail network and the A 29 motorway. On a site of approx. 100,000 square metres Panattoni will build the new packaging centre from where automotive parts of the brands Audi, Volkswagen and Volkswagen commercial vehicles will be shipped to the Group’s prod
A cooperation agreement was recently signed by the authorized persons of Güterverkehrszentrum Wilhelmshaven with Media K&, headquartered in Seoul. The agreement targets the representation of Germany’s only deep-water container port at Wilhelmshaven in South Korea. With a water depth of 18 metres and its modern terminal supra-structure, the port location in north-western Germany is well prepared for the challenges involved in handling today’s largest container ships of more than 20,000 TEU. The freight village offers adequate space capacities in the direct vicinity of the container terminal

Against a backdrop of expanding domestic refinery capacity, China has emerged as a more significant exporter of oil products in recent years, with the country’s seaborne exports doubling between 2013 and 2016 to total 36mt. In 2017, while a number of developments contributed to a slower rate of expansion in shipments, China’s seaborne oil products exports still rose to reach a new record. In full year 2017, Chinese seaborne exports of oil products grew by 6% to total 39mt, compared to imports of 30mt, and marking the second consecutive year in which China was a net seaborne oil products export
January 26th is Australia Day, a chance to celebrate all things Australian: vegemite, sporting prowess, BBQs, surfing, unusual (and frequently lethal) wildlife, digeridoos, Uluru, Kylie, Mad Max and so on. But from a shipping and seaborne trade perspective, perhaps the most relevant features of Australia are literally from the land ‘down under’, namely iron ore, coal and natural gas. Australia is, for the most part, sun-blasted ‘outback’: a vast area (about 5% of the world’s land mass) inhabited by less than 0.4% of the world’s population. And yet it accounts for about 20% of global seaborne e
One of the biggest stories of 2017 was the evolution of the market for LNG as a marine fuel, with a significant increase in new projects across the globe, demonstrating a growing embrace of gas-fuelled shipping throughout the industry. This year, we predict that a major challenge will be meeting the urgent demand for infrastructure brought on by a growing and diversifying fleet, and ensuring that a potential lack of suitable infrastructure does not begin to hold back an expanding market, in a year that is looking to be a tipping point for LNG shipping. As of November 2017, there were 111 LNG-f
Commenting ahead of Tuesday’s European Parliament plenary vote on international ocean governance, relating to the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, Dr Sian Prior, lead advisor to the Clean Arctic Alliance, said: “The Clean Arctic Alliance welcomes the recognition within the ocean governance resolution of the urgent need to agree a ban on the use and carriage in fuel tanks of heavy fuel oil (HFO) by Arctic shipping, and we urge MEPs to vote in favour of its adoption. With warming occuring at unprecedented levels in the Arctic, and sea ice is receding at a dramatic rate, the region is set for
After reporting on a range of gloomy statistics in 2016, has shipping been able to pick itself up from ‘rock bottom’? Strong trade volumes, a record S&P market and improving bulker and containership markets have all provided some welcome relief. But challenges in the tanker, gas and offshore markets continue while uncertainty around environmental regulation builds. As ever, it’s been an interesting year! ClarkSea Pick Up… After its all time low in 2016, the ClarkSea Index, our indicator of vessel earnings, rose by 14% y-o-y to average $10,768/day. Some welcome relief but still 10% below th
LOC is calling for better international cooperation and a marine investigation code to speed and simplify the process of managing a marine casualty. Too often local jurisdictions are unprepared, lacking in understanding and unwilling to cooperate, and as a result the process takes too long, with a negative outcome for the environment, the vessel’s crew or the damaged ship. Problems arise when a local authority does not know the limit of its jurisdiction and assumes authority of a casualty when they have no right to do so. There are too many examples of where the recovery of a grounded or damag
The car carrier sector has experienced very challenging market conditions over recent years, partly reflecting an estimated 2% decline in global seaborne car trade between 2013 and 2016. However, in common with a number of other shipping sectors, 2017 so far has seen an encouraging return to notably more positive trends on the demand side. The car carrier sector was probably one of the hardest hit by the global economic downturn, with seaborne car trade declining by more than 30% in 2009. Unlike in most other shipping sectors, where demand bounced back fairly quickly, it has taken ten years fo
