STX Offshore & Shipbuilding is highly expected to obtain the order for LNG-RV(Regasification Vessel), which is a specialized LNG vessel equipped with regasification facilities, for the first time in the company's history.
According to the foreign press, STX is currently negotiating with Greek DynaGas to win a contract for one 170,000-CBM class LNG-RV.
It has been reported that the new vessel at the sailing speed of 19.5 knots is projected to be delivered during the first half of 2015 and the price is to be around 300 million dollars."The newly ordered one will be the unique ship composed of 4 skids. We are talking with STX remembering the proverb "wise man does not trust all his eggs to one basket." commented Mr. George Prokopiou, a chairman of Dynacom Tankers(a holding company of DynaGas).
LNG-RV is similar to LNG-FSRU(Floating Storage and Regasification Unit) in that they are all equipped with facilities to regasify LNG, however, there is somewhat difference in terms of thruster.
Basically LNG-FSRU has no concept of thruster even though most of them so far ordered have actually been able to move by themselves.
Nevertheless, they are stationary off shore for a long time to regasify LNG and supply it to the ground whereas LNG-RV is more focused on the function of transportation.
LNG-FSRU is designed to travel at the speed of 5 knots but newly ordered LNG-RV is to be 19.5 knots almost as fast as container vessels.
